Nioxin Density Defend Styling Root Lifting Spray – 3D Styling Thickening Spray Review
Value Ratings
For the average guy (rating 8.6/10): the Nioxin Root Lifting Thickening Spray is a very versatile product, that could be useful to a lot of people. Its price point is pretty reasonable for a quality product and volume you get. It’s simple to use, and actually does what it claims to do.
If you’re on a budget (value rating 7.1/10): the consistency of good performance, easy of use and the amount of time it lasts before needing to repurchase could make this worth your while. I see it as a good alternative Label.m thickening tonic and Aveda Thickening tonic.
If price isn’t an obstacle and your opinion of value is just the product’s quality (your expected value is 7.6/10): the Nioxin Thickening Spray presents itself as an option if you like to have diversity in your hair styling range. It could make a suitable addition to one’s grooming arsenal if you want to make your thinner hair look thicker.

What is it?
The Nioxin Root Lifting Spray aka 3D Styling Thickening Spray is created specifically for thinning hair. It lifts the roots and provides a long-lasting hold, giving your hair a fuller and more lifted appearance throughout the day. Nioxin calls it ProThick technology that helps add texture, body and volume for thicker hairstyles and healthy-feeling hair.
Who is it for?
This hair thickening spray is designed for those with thin hair who want to add extra texture, body, and lift for thicker looking hair and fuller styles. It’s suitable for all types of hair lengths, and still would work well for other hair types who want to add more texture and hold, while still maintaining a more natural finish.
Let’s dive deeper and take a look a the performance of this Thickening Spray across the different aspects of the hair styling journey.
PRODUCT PERFORMANCE 8.2/10
As someone with very fine hair, I found this product did exactly what it claimed to do. It’s easy to use and makes my hair look thicker and fuller, with a natural and healthy finish. It provides hold and texture that lasts all day and allows it to be used as a stand-alone product for relaxed styles, or combined with other styling products for more complex styles.
The styling performance of the Nioxin Root Lifting Spray is strong and very consistent, which I love. I’ve been a big fan of the Nioxin shampoo and conditioners, which have been my go-to for years now, as they help keep my hair feeling healthy and appear fuller. So I’m very glad to have found this Nioxin thickening spray which competes with the 2 well-known thickening tonics (Label.m thickening tonic or Aveda Thickening tonic) that have been my go-tos for a long time. I’ve had issues with the availability of Label.m products, and Aveda is quite expensive, so this meets a happy in-between for me and is much more available online.
Similar to the other thickening tonics mentioned above Nioxin’s formula has a weightless formula that enhances your hair’s thickness without compromising its natural movement and flexibility and provides long-lasting hold. It probably adds more hold and structure than other thickening sprays I’ve used, which allows me to use it as a solo styling product most of the time, which makes life easier.
To me, it’s durability and moisture resistance help the Thickening Spray feel life-proof, and I can rely on it to get my hair style through the day.
PRICE AND AFFORDABILITY 9.1/10
Mid Range $$
Typically around $21 in the USA and £19 in the UK.
Priced within the mid-range spectrum, the Nioxin Styling Root Lifting Spray offers a premium quality product for a reasonable price. It’s cheaper than other premium products like Aveda Thickening tonic, and feels better for the hair than some of the cheaper products on the market like Label.m thickening tonic. So overall, it feels like a good deal.

WHO AND WHEN TO USE IT
Spray the Nioxin Root Lifting Spray onto damp or dry hair, focusing on the roots and areas where you desire extra hold and fullness. For optimal results, I’d recommend blow drying to style.
It works best in clean hair, but can help add life to second-day hair too.
The Nioxin Root Lifting Spray can be used without a blow dryer, but I find when allowed to dry naturally, my hair sticks together a little bit and needs a good run-through with your hand or brush once it’s dried for natural-looking results, but it’s performance is as good as if I used a hair dryer. This is probably, probably the only area where I might reach for an alternative like the Label.m thickening tonic or Aveda Thickening tonic, because these dry more naturally without intervention after drying.
AMOUNT OF PRODUCT USED PER APPLICATION
Moderate amount.
For a 150ml bottle, using 6-10 sprays is not too bad, so even if you’re using it regularly, it lasts quite a while. I found if I apply a few extra sprays around areas I want more fullness, it does help to add more thickness and hold.
This is an area where I feel the Nioxin Thickening Spray performs it’s alternatives, because I can spray more for a stronger holder, and it doesn’t make more hair feel as dry as products like Label.m thickening tonic or Aveda Thickening tonic.
PRODUCT CONSISTENCY
Watery Liquid Spray.
SCENT 8.8/10
I find it has a fresh and pleasant but gentle smell. Honestly, I don’t really notice the smell that much, which is something I like about the spray, but scents usually aren’t that good for you, the less the better. Plus better something more gentle than strong and specific.
WASHABILITY 8.4/10
Easy to wash out.
It need a good shampoo to completely wash this product out.
INGREDIENTS 7.6/10
I’m not an expert, but looking at the ingredients list, it seems pretty balanced formula. I’ve been using the Nioxin Root lifting spray for a while now, and unlike some other texturizing or sea salt sprays, my hair still feels healthy after prolonged usage, which is a plus in my books.
Nixion claims the following ingredients help promote healthier hair:
Peppermint Oil – Can assist in regulating sebum production and controlling oiliness.
Panthenol – a form of vitamin B5, Panthenol has moisturizing and nourishing benefits to the hair & scalp that help strengthen the hair, reduce breakage, and add thickness.
Mentha Arvensis lead Oil – Also known as wild mint oil, this oil is known for its refreshing and invigorating benefits that stimulate the scalp and promote circulation.

WOULD I BUY AGAIN?
Yes. I think the performance is great and consistent. There are still times when I reach for other products like Label.m thickening tonic if I want more matte finishes or don’t want to use a hair dryer, so I don’t think it’s full going to stop me for using other products. But it has become one of go-tos and I will be buying this again.
